I love this place! They serve an authentic deep dish pizza pie with a delicious buttery crust and amazing toppings. It typically takes about 30-35 minutes for them to bake a deep dish pizza, so don't be shy about calling ahead (or ordering online) for dine-in (they offer carry out as well). I'm not usually a fan of sausage on my pizza, but I have grown to absolutely love the sausage on F&O's pizza. If you pay attention to the local Groupon offerings, they often have one for Felix and Oscar's. Typically it's dine in only, and totally worth it. Unless you're a champion eater or a teenage boy, don't expect to be able to eat more than 2 slices from a large pizza in a sitting. The pizza reheats splendidly in the oven or toaster oven so my husband and I typically get a large pie and eat the rest over the course of a few days.

My son and I are gluten-free and very sensitive. We have had zero issues and have eaten here many times. Their GF pizza is awesome! Their GF pasta is okay, but not the best I've had. Their combo pasta is very very good, but mainly due to the meat and peppers (overcomes the pasta shortcomings). The staff is very knowledgeable about GF and they are very diligent about avoiding cross contamination. We would highly recommend it to others!

Keep looking if your expecting good service and pizza. The bacon cheese burger pizza was awful. Heavy on the ketchup and mustard, light on the other ingredients. With so many options for good food in the Des Moines area, we will not be returning.

Yummy!!! I have to eat gluten free and their gluten free pizza was awesome. Great selection of toppings. The only topping we didn't see that we really like is spinach but the food was fantastic! Also plenty of room to meet with family and friends!

Great place to hang out in the summer. Outside bar is one of the best around and two volleyball courts to boot

Just stopped in on a whim, holy cow they remodeled! Opened the whole restaurant up and gave it a new look! The menu looks just as great as it did before. The pizza is awesome but this time I tried the grilled salmon burger. What a tasty surprise. I was please with it so much I ditched the bun and just ate the patty. The homemade salad dressings are always good and the place was busy. Very good.

Visiting Merle Hay Mall for either shopping or movie purposes, I always pass by Felix and Oscars and hear that they have great deep dish Chicago style pizza. Well, we decided to give this place a try, but didn't feel like having pizza that day, so this review will focus on the non-pizza items this place has to offer. The exterior of the business looks very out-dated and poor in my opinion. This is why upon entering I was taken-aback at how nice it was. The interior is very well designed and there are a ton of TVs for all your sporting needs! There is also a full bar, what I'm getting at is, the interior is very nice. When we ate here, it wasn't too busy, only a handful of other tables. I'm not sure how busy this place usually gets, but it was nice eating in a somewhat peaceful atmosphere. For appetizers we ordered the Cheddar Nuggets, which are basically cheese curds, it tasted okay. For a drink, we shared the Strawberry Shortcake Irish liquor drink, this was very tasty! For our entrees we had the Fettuccini Alfredo with chicken and F&O's Special Pasta. Both comes with a salad which tasted good. The F&O's Special Pasta tasted okay, the flavors had some variety, but overall tasted pretty standard. The Fettuccini Alfredo with chicken however is a different story, it wasn't good at all. The alfredo cream was too heavy and too much, it was basically a soup when they served it. The taste was very bland, there was no variety, it honestly tasted like I was eating alfredo sauce. The chicken was bland as well, there was no taste to this dish. I am definitely willing to give this place another try to see how their pizza is. For now, I would advise to stray away from the Fettuccini Alfredo dish.

There are not too many places for deep dish pizza in Des Moines. F & O's is a decent place for that. It is a good, solid pizza with plentiful ingredients. Their crust is more flaky than chewy. It is okay, but is not extremely flavorful. They have a slightly chunky sauce that adds some texture. Our service was attentive, with our waitress quick on drink refills. You have to wait a bit the the pizza, but she made sure she checked on us often on a fairly busy Friday night. The place is much nicer than it used to be, but that isn't saying much. It is big and open, too bright at night, with many televisions. Come for food (or a ballgame) not the atmosphere.

What a joke! Walk in for lunch, cheap sign says "seat yourself"; so we seat ourselves and wait and wait and wait in this NEAR EMPTY restaurant! I get up to find someone and here comes the waitress...what a sourpuss...she REALLY hates her job and it shows! So we order, she's still unpleasant as hale, some onion tanglers....out comes a (SMALL - two handfuls) basket of overcooked and GREASE SOAKED onions pieces and bits....$6.50 for this! Do I really need to go on? If you want more, just read the other reviews: HORRIBLE service, mediocre food, high prices...No way Jose! Applebees is just across the parking lot; your money is much better spent there. F&O's should have spent less money on remodeling and used that money to up the employee wages in order to attract PROFESSIONAL servers...MANAGEMENT...your employees will make or break you..when you run the numbers and profits just aren't what you'd like...you know who to blame...YOURSELF!...for hiring such terrible servers to interact with your customers...and serving "food" that really shouldn't have left the kitchen...if anyone that really cared about what was being served was running the place...one location closed, one to go...tick, tick tick...

Good food? BEST CHICAGO DEEPDISH THIS SIDE OF THE MISSISSIPPI Good service? Alicia has been there forever, and is great when you are a regular Good atmosphere? recently renovated barside, a lot cleaner than it was Worth the price? Yes Will we go back? Everytime we are in Des Moines I have been a regular at Felix and Oscar's my whole life. In high school I went every Friday, and it was always the restaurant of choice for birthdays and graduations. The menu has changed up a bit throughout the years, the decor has been updated, and they have opened and closed a new location. However, the pizza has not changed for at least 25 years because it is that good and keeps people coming back! This place is great for hungry eaters, pizza lovers, families, and friends watching sports. It is a guaranteed stop every time I visit Des Moines.

So we were forced to use our groupon due to the free meal we received after our last disastrous experience. We ordered carryout in hopes to avoid any mishaps. Unfortunately that didn't happen. I walked in to get my carry out order to find out the server accidentally gave our pizza to another person. I had to wait an addition half hour for my order. No discounts or free items were offered for their mistake. No wonder their WDM location closed down. I am extremely frustrated and disappointed in their service. If you want Chicago style pizza just go to Chicago...

I was hesitant to try F&O's again after years of bad service. I made a to go order. Buffalo chicken sandwich was pretty good. Waffle fries aren't anything to write home about, especially when I found a four inch hair in them. They have great ranch though. I will never return to this establishment.

One word describes this place, odd. I swear the employees here have all been in the restaurant business for less than a month. It is in an odd location. You walk in the front door and the office is out in the open where seats used to be. Odd. The service is just odd. No sense of organization at all. I was the only one at the bar and the bartender let my beer run dry for nearly 10 minutes. On top of that the beer was expensive. I ordered the Chicago-style personal pan pizza. It defines the term that even bad pizza is good pizza. Being from Chicago, I know deep dish pizza. The pizza was deep. The taste was shallow. The sauce had no taste at all. I really hate to leave a review like this, but it was probably the worst restaurant that I have been to in the last few years. Simply put, nothing was good.

I have been visiting F&O's on a fairly regular basis for over 10 years. We normally always sit on the pub side and normally always have slow service unless on the rare slow night. Order a pitcher of beer and have no worries about thirst while waiting for the Chicago style pizza to come out of the oven. A great place for a get together to watch a ball game. The new tables and decor really freshened the place up. The best deep dish I have ever had, don't bother with their thin crust. If you don't enjoy deep dish pizza this place isn't for you.

Service is pathetic. The waitress was incompetent. My girlfriend and I sat there for 40 minutes before anyone offered to refill my water (which is after flagged a different waiter down). Oh yah it took 45 minutes to get out appetizers which is after we said something after three tables that got here after us got their food before us. I got my wings which were baked and above average but I could hardly enjoy then due to my frustration. After about 1 hour and 10 mins we got our "deep dish meat pie pizza." I think I counted 7 pieces of meat on this unmeat pie. Sauce was really good but the pizza lacked that true deep dish feel. Lesson is to order carry out from this crappy "restaurant." I wanted to be out at the most 45 mins but it took an hour and a half to feed my girlfriend and I. When I think of Felix and oscars, first thing that will come to mind is PATHETIC/INCOMPETENT/AVERAGE.

Meh. I really wanted to like this place, but it had little going for it, except our sweet waitress who tried very hard. She gave my kids half a merichino jar in their Shirley Temples. The pizza crust was flavored with, well, nothing. Maybe a sprinkle of cement? I ordered the zinfandel, and got a glass of white zin instead. My husband informed me that it was probably because I looked like a white zin drinker after 10 hours on the road and no shower, and she was trying to help me out. Still, it is the kind of place with iceberg lettuce in the salads, and the beer equivalent of iceberg in the taps. They had about a thousand tvs, though so it would be a good place to enjoy Sunday football or March Madness.

Nice and cool inside when its got outside... Beer for 3.50 and a 9.99 cheesy chicken philly with plenty of sports on TV makes this one of my favorite hideouts. Wait staff is nice and helpful and honest when it comes to the menu... Not the usual "everything is good" response. I'll be back

I've been to this restaurant twice and the pizza just isn't good. I'm from Chicago and the deep dish pizza here is nowhere comparable to what's in Chicago. Their veggie selections are pretty sad (what reputable pizza place doesn't have spinach??), they go stingy with their pizza sauce, and the crust is nothing to write home about. To me, the crust is an integral part of what truly makes a great deep dish pizza, and F&O's crust just doesn't make the grade. In fact, I ordered a deep dish pizza that came out undercooked. The crust was soft, doughy,, and definitely undercooked. It was so disgusting I couldn't eat it. Sorry folks of Des Moines, I feel bad if this is your standard for "Chicago deep dish pizza." The real deal is only about a 5 hour drive away! Gas is cheap now so do yourselves a favor and go try the real stuff.

we sat in the bar on Friday night and had a great meal. Fries for an appetizer were really good - they are thick steak fries and very tasty. Most of us ordered the Chicago style stuffed I'm from Chicago and always am very skeptical of places outside the city that advertise "Chicago style" Felix & Oscars comes pretty darn close when it comes to getting Chicago style right. The bottom crust is a little doughy and thick, but they put a healthy amount of cheese in the pizza and the sauce was really flavorful - the perfect combo of sweet and spicy. Sausage is from Graziano's so very, very tasty. They had lots of non-pizza options as well. Tablemate ordered the Italian beef sandwich and liked it. Service was a little slow (yes, I understand the stuffed pizza takes awhile) - drink refills were pretty infrequent, which was a little annoying when the place was nowhere near full and I sat with an empty glass (twice) for a good 10-15 minutes. Great spot!

The food is great. We asked for carrots and celery and was told they didn't have any. Who doesn't have carrots and celery?! Service sucks. Took them ten minutes to wait on us.

As a lover of Chicago foods like Italian beef sandwiches and deep dish pizza, I'm always on the lookout for authentic places that recreate those great tastes here in Des Moines. After visiting Felix and Oscar's, I can say with certainty that it is one of those gems and that I will be back for more deep dish pizza. Now I don't want my 5-star rating to imply that this pizza was on par with the likes of Pizzeria Uno, Giordano's, or Lou Malnati's - because it's not. But I still feel Felix and Oscar's is worthy of 5 stars because their pizza is damn good and does a great job of recreating Chicago deep dish here in Des Moines, and pizza isn't judged in a vacuum. I highly suspect many of the more negative reviews here have come from those who aren't really familiar with deep dish - too much sauce, no cheese on top, etc. But if deep dish is your thing and you can't make it to Chicago, Felix and Oscar's may just be for you.

Ate there for the first time. No one greeted us at the door, tables covered in dirty dishes, wait staff too busy hanging out at the bar or on cell phones. Other patrons had to wave down staff or stand up to indicate they needed something. Waited almost 10 minutes (place was not busy at 2pm) for our waitress to take our order. Food was luke warm and over priced for what we got. We won't go back again or recommend to others either.

I have heard many good things about Felix & Oscars (4050 Merle Hay Rd, Des Moines) over the years but had never actually stopped in to ear there. Last night was the night that I finally would be going there. They are known in Des Moines for having a great deep-dish Chicago-Style pizza and I thought I would go and experience that myself. I left disappointed. It may just have been the night, but nothing seemed to go right from the start. When we arrived, they sat us in a side room where a group was planning to meet. We didn't know that there was going to be a group there later, or else we would have asked to be seated elsewhere. Service was slow and once that larger group arrived was practically not to be seen. Our waitress did an alright job up until the group arrived and then we weren't even on the radar. We could have easily walked out of the place without paying and they wouldn't have even known about it. She finally brought us our tab and we left as soon as we could. If the place knew that there was going to be a group in advance, they should has staffed the restaurant properly. The food is overpriced, though my single Chicago-Style pizza was good. It took almost an hour to get it, which even for that kind of pizza, is way too long. Again, I think the group had something to do with it. Some of the pasta dishes on the menu were over $15 and if you purchase a pizza and beer you can't get out of there for under $20 per person. Lousy atmosphere. The restaurant is old, the decorations are tacky and the tables were dirty. The bar is okay, but they have a serious lack of draft beers for a place that is known for their pizza and beer. Music was loud in the dining area. The bottom line - don't eat there unless you're willing to pay the premium for a product that you can get at other places in Des Moines for a lot less. I really wanted to like this place but it's hard to do so with the high prices, the long wait, the cruddy atmosphere and the slow service. I probably won't be back a second time.

Used to eat at this place when I was a kid. Way back in the early 80's. Got the chance to come back now I'm 40. This place is awesome still the way I remembered it. It sucks that I live 2 hours away. There all meat deep dish pizza was the best I've ever had. Will totally be back again. Wish they would get there pizza shipped option going. I would totally order on a frequent basis. Thanks for letting my memories of how good this place was not be ruined.

Food wasn't worth the price, quality was worth it. The onions rings were soggy and uneatable. The Chicago style pizza, was decent, but needed to be reheated once I got home.

This place is great! I have been to a few restaurants in Chicago, and in my opinion Felix and oscars is much better. My advice is to order a cheese topper, with Italian sausage. It is a little spicy, but very tasty. The Alfredo topping is also very good, but it is rich. The crust is the best crust I have ever tasted, and the service is decent.

  • Justin B.

My rating is based on Pizza only. Felix and Oscars is not a four star restaurant, but as far as Pizza goes, it is second to only Wig and Pen. Felix and Oscars used to be a better restaurant than it is today, but it is still pretty dang good. One thing unique about Felix and Oscars is their low-fat cheese option. I personally do not care about this option, but people like my mother and others I know of, find this very accommodating. A warning: Because it is Chicago style it will take a good 50 minutes to prepare. It is wise to call ahead before you arrive. All in all, Good job, F&Os.

  • John M.

Like the food, though I prefer the thin crust to the Chicago style. My issue with this place is their billing system. I've gone in there and had a sandwich for $6.99 and gotten a bill for $40, and when I inquired, the waitress was like "you didn't have 3 pizzas?". Also, if you get a water, you're gonna get charged for a soda. They need to work on their wait staff. Oh, and asking them to split a bill is like watching a monkey do a math problem. So I go occasionally for the good pizza (except the cheeseburger pizza-that is quite disgusting), but 1/2 the time I end out pissed off due to getting the wrong bill. The West Des Moines location doesn't seem to have this problem like the Merle Hay location does.

We tried Felix & Oscars in Urbandale last night (Westown Parkway at 50th; maybe that's West Des Moines or Clive?). The deep dish chicken bacon ranch pizza was good. The deep dish taco pizza was better. The onion straws were mediocre. I see the comparison with Chicago style pizza. But I've had much better Chicago style pizza in Chicago, Rolling Meadows, Arlington Heights, Elk Grove Village, Palatine, etc. My favorite was always Ginos East Sausage deep dish in Arlington Heights after watching the horse races at Arlington. Too bad there aren't horse races there anymore... Felix & Oscars was rather expensive for a pizza place. I'm glad we tried it. But I doubt we eat there again. I'd give this place three stars if the per-person cost were a couple dollars lower. The Tavern II around the corner has better pizza IMHO. Although they're also rather expensive for a pizza place.

I sat in the pub area and I personally like the one in West Des Moines better as the atmosphere in this one is a little more dark and kind of grimy. We went on a Saturday night at 6:30. The area was about 3/4 full with a large birthday party in one section. The service however was dreadful on this night. We took a high top table right in front of the bar so it wasn't hard for people to see us. It took about five minutes for somebody to bring us menus and then another five for somebody to come back and get our drink order. Salads came out timely and like others have said, ordering a deep dish means you have to allow more time for it to cook so I was fine with that. As usual the pizza was great. It was just the service that really lacked at this time. I have to assume the birthday party was reserved so I don't understand why they didn't bring in extra staff but I guess that would be too easy.

Your initially greeted by..oh wait..the hostess ran away when she saw us come in--behind a pole?! The manager lady sat us rudely and without a friendly word--"how many?!" in that chalkboard grump voice. The deep dish pizza was good?? Not really--the crust tasted like hyvee brand pouch mix and was obnoxiously tooooo thick. Theres a reason they offer weekly groupon, restaurant.com ,and free food specials. Better chicago deep dish in kazakhstan i bet.

  • Roz S.

The deep-dish pizza is fantastic, but the pasta was terrible - mushy with bad-tasting sauce. The service is also very slow, even when the restaurant is practically empty and waitstaff are standing around. Take a deep-dish pizza to go and you'll be satisfied. Otherwise, I'd recommend avoiding this place.

  • I l.

Their pizza is just as good as any deep dish from Chicago. If some one tells you that it's not as good as X in Chicago. It's because they are one of Mayor Daly's spies, and have pizza envy. The only thing besides the pizza you need to consider is the garlic bread, while you wait for the pizza. This is your order learn it well, Large sausage and mushroom pizza, deep dish. Two orders of garlic bread, one with cheese, and a couple of beers, preferably miller, and keep them coming. The Merle hay location is slow, not very good service, and looks like it is straight out of the 70's. I say hell yeah, real pizzeria still exist. If you want something else go to olive garden, Square. If you want a 3 lb pizza and few beers, sac up an go to Felix and Oscars.

Quite simply the best chicago style pizza in town. I have been going here for many years and it shows. If you haven't been I highly recomend you go try it. I especially like the cheese topper.

Hands down, my favorite Des Moines area restaurant! I'm originally from Chicagoland and consider myself a bit of a Chicago style pizza freak. I was skeptical that any location in central Iowa could truly get it right, but F&Os rivals any place I've visited in the city. I've just had the Chicago style pizza, and haven't sampled any pastas or other entrees. Friends have told me the sandwiches are good, but I can't imagine sitting in that restaurant with the aroma of pizza swirling around and then trying to enjoy something else. Not satisfying!! The appetizers -- garlic bread and toasted ravioli -- are great. The newer West Des Moines location is a bit cleaner and nicer, but the old Merle Hay spot serves the same delicious food. Deep dish pizza can take a half hour or more, so be patient or call ahead.

To me its the best Chicago style deep dish pizza you will get around this neck of the woods. I never get anything other then the Pizza and the Beer! They also deliver in a limited area so I would suggest checking that out as an option but just like when going in the pizza does take about 45-50 minutes to cook.

  • Mia R.

I won't set foot in the place again. The wait staff and management were terrible. I asked them to check the temperature because I was freezing, a little girl at the next table was shivering, all the other patrons had their coats on and zipped up, etc., you get the picture. The wait person came back and said that the owner was comfortable so he would not change the termperature. He was in the kitchen, hello!!! Actually that happened on two visits. On another visit, a man who was identified as the owner's father made some comments to me that I found very offensive. I inquired and found the owner is a Des Moines native; not sure why another review linked him to a Chicago restaurant. Besides, I've never been too impressed with the pizza that I have had in Chicago. To be honest, there is so much good pizza in the Des Moines metro, I don't need a place with a bad attitude. As far as the food, it was okay. Nothing to write home about, but okay. Again, not worth the hastle.

As far as I'm concerned, Felix & Oscar's is the only place in Des Moines worthy of calling their pizza Chicago-style. Walking into F&Os is like entering a 1970s supper club - big leather booths, wood paneling, dark carpet. They've been around for awhile, and they're really good at what they do, so don't let the dated interior throw you. The service will probably not be overly solicitous, and it will probably be slow. You just have to trust me - the food is worth it. Order your Chicago-style pizza as soon as you sit down - it takes awhile to make, so you'll probably want to order an appetizer too. I recommend the breaded mushrooms. (Other stuff is probably good too, I just like those mushrooms so much I never order anything else... except pizza, of course.) F&Os has sandwiches, pasta, etc., but I've never tried them. Really, I don't know why you would order anything other than Chicago-style pizza here. Stick to what they're good at - you won't be disappointed!

We had purchased a Groupon to try this place out and found a hidden gem! They have two sides the family restruant and a bar/lounge. They are completely separated from each other with different enterances. We first walked into the restraunt area and was seated promptly. after looking around my fiance and I decided we were probably going to be more comoftable in the lounge so we switched sides and the waitress did not make a big deal over us doing so. Once in the lounge we ordered a pitcher of beer ($8, not bad!) then looked over the pizza menu. Plenty of specialty pies to shoose from and you can even build your own. They do offer Gluten free pizzas as well. We went with the Combonation pie chicago style deep dish. The wait was a little long but we played trivia so it didn't seem that bad. When we got the pizza it was great! plenty of topping and good mix of veggies nad meat. Only grip is they used canned mushrooms and we prefer fresh ones. I could only eat two pieces and I was stuffed. We had half a pie leftover and our waiter boxed it up for us and gave us a few tips on reheating, which worked great when we had them for leftovers a few days later. All in all a great experience and we will be back again.

I like Felix & Oscars Chicago style pizza almost better than some of Chicago's Chicago style pizza. The crust is what makes this pizza! Go when you have time to wait because good pizza takes time. It can get a bit pricy if ordering for a group but well worth it. I never like to eat in as I think the atmosphere in the bar is a bit dingy - I recommend delivery if you are close or pick up.

One of the great things about moving to Des Moines, is the plethora of pizza options. "F&O's" is a favorite. Our usual is: cheese-topper, alfredo, mushroom and black-olive. Amazing and when we get a large size, it usually feeds us for a few days!

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations.
